Why use this generator

  • Job offer comparison — convert a $32/hr offer and a $68,000/yr offer to the same scale before you negotiate.
  • Freelancer setting rates — work back from your target annual to an hourly rate that covers self-employment tax, healthcare, and unpaid weeks.
  • Salary negotiation prep — see exactly how a $5,000 raise lands in your monthly take-home after federal, state, and FICA.
  • Side-hustle decisions — figure out whether a 10-hour-a-week gig at $40/hr meaningfully moves your annual number.
  • Relocation math — model take-home in Texas (no state tax) vs California (~6%) before accepting the offer.

How it works

  1. 1Enter your pay amount and pick the frequency you actually get paid in — hourly, weekly, biweekly, monthly, or annual.
  2. 2If you're hourly, set your weekly hours and weeks worked per year. Default 40×52 covers a standard full-time year.
  3. 3Read the breakdown — every cadence (hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, annual) recomputes live as you type.
  4. 4Optional: open the tax estimator, pick your filing status and state, and see federal + state + FICA come off the top.
  5. 5Hit Copy Results for a plain-text summary, or save your numbers via the email box — we'll send a clean copy plus quarterly tax-deadline reminders if you're self-employed.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the take-home estimate?
It uses 2025 federal brackets (the IRS's official inflation-adjusted tables), the 2025 Social Security wage base of $176,100, and a simplified flat effective rate per state. It does NOT model 401(k) contributions, HSAs, pre-tax health premiums, itemized deductions, or the additional 0.9% Medicare tax above $200k. Treat it as a starting point for back-of-the-envelope decisions. Consult a CPA for actual tax liability.
Why does my hourly rate × 2,080 hours not match my actual salary?
Most salaried jobs pay on a 26-biweekly-paychecks schedule, which is 2,080 hours (40 × 52). But many companies treat your hourly equivalent as annual ÷ 2,080, while your actual W-2 reflects 26 × biweekly. If you take unpaid time off or your company has fewer than 52 working weeks, the math drifts. Set the 'weeks per year' field to match your real situation.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly?
Biweekly = every 2 weeks = 26 paychecks per year. Semi-monthly = twice a month (typically 15th and last day) = 24 paychecks per year. They're close but not identical — biweekly checks are smaller and you get 2 extra paychecks. Both are common in US payroll; check your last pay stub to confirm which one you're on.
Do you store my salary information?
Only if you enter your email and click Send — and even then we store just the email address (for tax-reminder outreach) plus an anonymized IP hash that rotates daily so we can rate-limit abuse. We don't store your actual salary numbers. Everything else stays in your browser.
Which states don't have income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (wage income is exempt; interest and dividends are taxed for older returns), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. The state dropdown labels all nine of them.
I'm a freelancer — what else do I need to think about?
Self-employment tax (15.3% covering both halves of FICA), quarterly estimated tax payments, business expenses, and health insurance not being employer-subsidized. You'll also want a Privacy Policy if your freelance site collects any visitor data (even Google Analytics counts) — generate one free at /privacy-policy-generator. For client contracts, our /nda-generator covers one-way and mutual NDAs.
Are these 2025 numbers or 2026?
Federal brackets and FICA wage base are the 2025 IRS values. The IRS typically publishes 2026 inflation adjustments in October–November of the prior year — once those land, we'll update. Use this as a directional estimate; bracket boundaries shift by a few thousand dollars year over year, but rates rarely change.
